is what (with the help of Andy Eagle's attempt above) I make of it,<br>along with a suggested interpretation (remember it is a poem):<br><br>[1] I was sitting bi' 'ahse last evening,<br>[2] Me muther an' fahther were off,<br>
[3] 'Cause they'd yeard that me old nob Susanna<br>[4] Was laid up in bed wi' a cough.<br><br>[5] She's some brass has me old nob Susanna,<br>[6] That's t'reason she's looked after so.<br>
[7] If they've nowt, well they're nought by a bother.<br>
[8] There's a sample -- me old uncle George,<br><br>[1] I was sitting at home [in the house][*1] last evening<br>[2] My mother and father were away,<br>[3] Because they'd heard that my old [friend?][*2] Susanna<br>
[4] Was ill in bed with a cough.<br><br>[5] She has money, my old [friend?] Susanna,<br>[6] That's the reason she is taken care of so well.<br>[7] If they have nothing, well their nothing but a nuisance<br>[8] Take my old uncle George, for example.<br>
<br>[*1] It sounds like "bit" with the "t" replaced by a glottal stop,<br>but I can't be sure. I also wonder if it is a "glottal-stopped"<br>version of the Scots "bin hoose" (inside the house/into the house).<br>
<br>[*2] "nob" (which is what it sounds like) is clearly a dialect<br>word, and I can't be sure of its meaning, I have suggested "friend",<br>but then a better "translation" would probably be "mate" or "chum".<br>
