I believe the original Leon-Portilla reference is "Testimonios nahuas sobre

Duran's authorship is correcrt.  The term was made popular by Miguel Leon
Portilla in an article he did many years ago on Nahua under the Spanish.  I
don't have the reference, right at hand, but will look for it.
