Recently it has released three works of importance to Mesoamericanists who are interested in Nahuatl, and related languages. For Spanish speakers, it has made Jane H. and Kenneth C. Hill's well-known work, Speaking Mexicano, available in Spanish (as Hablando mexicano: La dinámica de una lengua sincrética en el centro de México), translated by José Antonio Flores Farfán and Gerardo López Córdoba. The Hill's work is an excellent study of modern Nahuatl speakers in Mexico. It is based on a decade of research in the region around the Malinche volcano in the Puebla-Tlaxcala region. It is a solid ethnography which also traces language use, specifically of Nahuatl. As part of a growing literature of colonial Nahuatl documents published in modern bi-lingual editions, CIESAS has also published the first volume of Vida y bienes olvidados: Testamentos indígenas novohispanos. This work, edited by Teresa Rojas Rabiela, Elsa Leticia Rea López and Constantino Medina Lima, contains testaments written both in Spanish and in Nahuatl (translated into Spanish by the editors) from the town of Ocotelulco. The work also has a very informative introduction which discusses colonial testaments, and other practical considerations. One section deals with testaments which were originally written in Spanish, while another focuses on those composed in Nahuatl. It is projected to be the first of six volumes which will focus on Nahuatl and Spanish testaments from the sixteenth and seventeenth-century, largely from the Archivo General de la Nación. A third work which has appeared concerning Nahuatl speakers is Cuatreros somos y toindioma hablamos: Contactos y conflictos entre el náhuatl y el español en el sur de México, by José Antonio Flores Farfán. This is a study of language and cultural dynamic in the Balsas region of the state of Guerrero. In the title of the work, cuatrero refers to the Spanish spoken by the local inhabitants and their difficulty in learning it in the wake of the Spanish conquest and cultural hegemony. On the other hand toindioma is a play on words in Nahuatl which combines the possessive prefix "to-", meaning our, and a made-up word which combines "indio" and "idioma." This play on words is all the more poignant since the term "indio" is highly negatively charged, and not normally used by Nahuatl speakers. Every year in the Spring, I go to Huitzitzilingo, Mexico on a mission trip. It is an Indian village and the people have maintained = the Aztec culture and language. I have been searching for some learning materials for a long time. I just found two sources: http://www.umt.edu/history/NAHUATL/gateway.html - The Nahuatl gateway = has some very interesting information. There is a link to books on = Nahuatl. Dr. Schwaller can copy (with permission of the author) the out of print = book Foundation Course in Nahuatl Grammar. It's a two volume course that = focuses on Grammar but has a lot of basic language also. I just received them = and am very impressed with the content. I hope to be speaking Nahuatl by = the end of the year! http://languagelab.bh.indiana.edu/ - this is the language lab at = Indiana University. They have three language tapes on Nahuatl. They are from = the same author as the book referenced above but I am not yet sure if they compliment the books. The tapes are led in Spanish and primarily focus = on Nahuatl grammar. It's not very easy to understand without having a = command over the language....but I hope to get there. Recently it has released three works of importance to Mesoamericanists who are interested in Nahuatl, and related languages. For Spanish speakers, it has made Jane H. and Kenneth C. Hill's well-known work, Speaking Mexicano, available in Spanish (as Hablando mexicano: La din?mica de una lengua sincr?tica en el centro de M?xico), translated by Jos? Antonio Flores Farf?n and Gerardo L?pez C?rdoba. The Hill's work is an excellent study of modern Nahuatl speakers in Mexico. It is based on a decade of research in the region around the Malinche volcano in the Puebla-Tlaxcala region. It is a solid ethnography which also traces language use, specifically of Nahuatl. As part of a growing literature of colonial Nahuatl documents published in modern bi-lingual editions, CIESAS has also published the first volume of Vida y bienes olvidados: Testamentos ind?genas novohispanos. This work, edited by Teresa Rojas Rabiela, Elsa Leticia Rea L?pez and Constantino Medina Lima, contains testaments written both in Spanish and in Nahuatl (translated into Spanish by the editors) from the town of Ocotelulco. The work also has a very informative introduction which discusses colonial testaments, and other practical considerations. One section deals with testaments which were originally written in Spanish, while another focuses on those composed in Nahuatl. It is projected to be the first of six volumes which will focus on Nahuatl and Spanish testaments from the sixteenth and seventeenth-century, largely from the Archivo General de la Naci?n. A third work which has appeared concerning Nahuatl speakers is Cuatreros somos y toindioma hablamos: Contactos y conflictos entre el n?huatl y el espa?ol en el sur de M?xico, by Jos? Every year in the Spring, I go to Huitzitzilingo, Mexico on a mission trip. It is an Indian village and the people have maintained = the Aztec culture and language. I have been searching for some learning materials for a long time. Dr. Schwaller can copy (with permission of the author) the out of print = book Foundation Course in Nahuatl Grammar. It's a two volume course that = focuses on Grammar but has a lot of basic language also. I just received them = and am very impressed with the content. I hope to be speaking Nahuatl by = the end of the year! http://languagelab.bh.indiana.edu/ - this is the language lab at = Indiana University. They have three language tapes on Nahuatl. They are from = the same author as the book referenced above but I am not yet sure if they compliment the books. The tapes are led in Spanish and primarily focus = on Nahuatl grammar. The title of the exhibition is "Luz Jim=E9nez: Symbol of a Millennial People," and it is about the career in art of do=F1a Luz Jim=E9nez, who was model for Jean Charlot, Diego Rivera, Fernando Leal, Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, and many other members of the art world of Mexico City in the 1920s. Linguists know of do=F1a Luz through her memoirs in Nahuatl (published in Nahuatl and Spanish by UNAM Press and in Nahuatl and English by the University of Oklahoma Press) and her collected stories (published in Nahuatl and Spanish by UNAM), but they have not known until lately about he= r life in art. This is the second exhibition on the theme that has been hosted by Mexic-Arte Museum. The first was about Luz's early life and her home town of Milpa Alta. It was entitled "Luz and the Good Teachers." The current exhibit (originally entitled "Luz Jim=E9nez: Model and Muse of the Mexican School of Painting") takes up the story of her life immediately after the Mexican Revolution.
