Actually, Molina has the form which Mr. Corti is referring to.

Vitzitzilin. cierto paxarito. (f. 157v)

So there does not seem to have been a change in that word in the form of a 
reduplication, at least not between "classical" náhuatl and the modern 
Hueyapan dialect that Magnus is referring to.
