If you have adobe homes... 
 
I remember as a child we would make ditches around the house to prevent rain run off from getting into the foundation and the walls of the house.

On the other hand, irrigation ditches and canals almost always run between fields (not down the middle of fields) and do serve as boundary markers. I am not familiar with ditches running around houses.

1) a "ditch" is not a boundary marker. what we are talking about here is morethan like a stone...a series of stones....or just one stone. Not a ditcharound a house.Michael
