Etymology of Chichimeca

Dear Listeros,

Im also curious about the etymology of the expression cichimeca.
I always thought that it was made up by the plural of the chichi `dogs´, so chichime, as people might have called the `savages´ from the north, and than later, -ca(tl) (being) was attached in order to express a meaning like dog(s)-like person ( I am aware that by normal nahuatl rules the composition should be chichicame. maybe some kind of metathesis operated here?).
