> The control of water in the Valley of Mexico, which was dominated by an unpredictable inland sea, was crucial in the creation of Tenochtitlan, one of the largest cities in the world in 1500 and seat of the Mexica emperors. Rulers in Tenochtitlan and other cities in the Valley proclaimed their control of the Valley’s waters in public sculpture and also created artificial watery landscapes—something between the earthwork and the garden. This talk looks at two of those sites, Tetzcotzinco and Chapultepec, which offered models for the proper roles of both ruler and water.
