Heidi,

Thanks for that detailed report! I want to add a few things, mostly coming
out of the LSA Conversation on "Archiving" that happened the weekend after
the E-MELD meeting. (For those who were unaware of it, the LSA convened a
conference and a meeting for people to talk about the role of LSA in
documenting endangered languages.)

A slight comment on this, which may or may not affect the timing of our
tutorial. Susan Penfield, at the University of Arizona, said she might try
to organize an event where community members and linguists interact at the
meeting. If such an event takes place, we should talk to Maggie about (i)
minimally making sure they don't take place at the same time and (ii)
seeing if they could both take place at mutually beneificial times. Just
something to keep on the radar.

Some comments on this:

1. Carol Genetti, at UCSB, says UCSB is planning to hold even year field
methods summer schools at UCSB starting in 2008. We should try to involve
them, if they are interested, in our 2007 plans since, it seems, they will
need more advice on the technological aspects of such an institute than
the traditional field methods stuff. As far as I know, our planned course
will be the first of its kind in North America--with Rausing and DoBeS
having done similar things in Europe (ours will be further original in
not being tied to any one organization and having to speak to as general
an audience as possible).

2. Lenore Grenoble and I, on behalf of Heidi and David Harrison, agreed to
try to put together a coordinate grant proposal for the Institute
incorporating a course and some fabulous conference accompanying the
course in some relevant way. For example, Peter Austin pointed out at the
Conversation that we should try to move beyond simply calling in
filmmakers to teach us about making videos but should try to begin a
dialog with them about our respective documentary needs and visions. We
could, perhaps, invite a filmmaker both as course teacher and as keynote
speaker at the conference, and satisfy two needs with one set of funds.

3. Rumors were afoot that the Stanford Institute would look kindly upon
"clustered" course proposals. Some people at the conversatioon suggested
that, in addition to the course Heidi and I are planning and the Hale
chair course on field methods, some other course(s) should be proposed on
an endangered languages them. A revitalization course, in particular, was
suggested. We should be on the lookout for such courses to coordinate
efforts.

One further note on this point:
a. The 2007 Ken Hale Chair for field methods has been nominated. As of the
Conversation, Maggie Reynolds said she was not in a position to say who
was chosen and it was not clear if they had accepted. In any case, once
the identity of the individual is known, we should keep in touch with
them. (If anyone on this list knows who it is and feels comfortable
telling me or Heidi, please do so!) On that note, Jane Simpson, one of
this year's Hale chairs, pointed out that a course like the one we are
planning could be a great benefit to a field methods class--we can,
perhaps, get a letter of support from her at some point.
