Résumé

Verbal morphology is argued to restrict the formation of reflexives,
reciprocals and impersonals. The proposed analysis is based on the
observation that verbal morphology reflects case elimination (Reinhart
& Siloni 2002, 2003, Dobrovie-Sorin 1998, Cinque 1988, Chomsky 1981)
and is developed within Reinhart’s (2000) theory, according to which
verbal variants (reflexives, reciprocals, impersonals) are the outcome
of thematic arity operations. My innovation is to link the type of
verbal morphology with the kind of case that can be reduced (Papangeli
2004).

A suffix (Greek te) obligatorily eliminates only the accusative case
feature of the verb in all instances of verbal alternations. A clitic
(French se, Italian si) has a wider case-absorbing capacity. The clitic
is compatible with accusative, dative and, occasionally, nominative.
Reflexives, reciprocals and impersonals thus appear in a larger variety
of case configurations in clitic languages. Evidence is provided from
cross-linguistic phenomena, such as reflexivization of the benefactor
(dative) (Jean s’ est envoyé une lettre), impersonals and other
phenomena.
