L'histoire d'O:
The syntactic and semantic properties of a quantificational and predicative
suffix in Iraqw (Cushitic, Tanzania)

Abstract

At first sight, the function of the suffixo in Iraqw seems to render the
noun (phrase) adverbial. Sentential adverbials often contain this suffix
and nouns with this suffix behave like sentence adverbs, e.g.
matlo'tomorrow', matlowo'tomorrow (as adverb)'. However, the noun phrase
with this suffix may also be subject. Verbal nouns that occur outside the
verbal complex often contain this suffix, e.g./ayto'o dooslaro a-slaa'
'Maize cultivating I-like'. The suffix is also used to indicate the element
that is the scope of negation, of yes/no questioning, the theme of the
question, or the ground for comparison. There is a morpheme that has a
similar function in the verbal domain and that is in form similar to the
copula. I have glossed this morpheme pred for predicative. The unified
function of these morphemes is sub-predication. The meaning of the suffix o
includes a quantificational aspect: it indicates that the referent is
constructed of distinguishable entities and that all these entities are
concerned.
