Stranding and Weak Pronouns

RESUME

The surface variation within the Dutch Middle field often makes it
difficult
to determine in which order its constituents are base-generated. I will
attempt to develop a tool with which the unmarked positions of various PP
types (adjuncts, arguments, and secondary predicates) can be
ascertained. I
argue that the distribution of stranded prepositions, which obey a
Freezing
constraint, can be used for this purpose, and that the same holds for
prepositions with a weak pronominal complement. Besides the expected
descriptive generalizations which can be employed in a cartographic
inventory, the results of these twin diagnostics also include support
for a
particular analysis of predicative complement constructions, as well as
evidence that Dutch violates the LCA and is underlyingly SOV.
