PERFORMATIVES IN THE EXPRESSIVE DIMENSION

Résumé:
Expressives like 'damn' and 'bastard' have, when uttered, an
immediate and powerful impact on the context.  They are
*performative*, often destructively so.  They are revealing of
the perspective from which the utterance is made, and they can
have a dramatic impact on how the current and future utterances
are perceived.  This, despite the fact that speakers are
invariably hard-pressed to articulate what they mean.  My goal
is a general theory of this volatile, indispensable class of
natural language meanings.  The theory is build around six
descriptive properties.  I develop a formal system in which
these properties are entailments of specific (i.e., expressive)
denotations.  The theory I develop is multidimensional in a
deep sense: the models for descriptive and expressive content
are fundamentally different, so one need not work very hard to
keep the descriptive and expressive dimensions separate.
