"On piggy-backing and its import for a competence/performance distinction"

Résumé :
While "Piggy-backing" (the fact that one system allows correlated traits to 
piggy back advantageous traits in another system) has been acknowledged for 
years, its import is still neglected and subject to constant 
misinterpretations.
This talk tends to address the import of this state of affairs for linguistics 
in general, with special attention to the alleged distinction between 
polysynthetic vs analytic languages. It is claimed that to the extend this 
distinction, exists at all, it should be rephrased in terms of the competence 
vs performance distinction.
