"The acquisition of anaphoric expressions in Brazilian Portuguese".

Résumé :
This talk will discuss the syntax and semantics of anaphoric expressions"se" 
(self), "ele" (him) and "ele mesmo" (him-self) in Brazilian Portuguese. It 
will be claimed that "se" is a typical anaphor, obeying principle A of 
binding theory. However, "ele", which is typically analyzed as a pronoun, 
does not qualify as such, since it does not comply with principle B. It is 
best analyzed as an UBE (unspecified bindable expression, Zribi-Hertz 
1995). "Ele mesmo" is an intensive form or an unexpectedness marker (similar 
to French lui-même).
The results of two experiments, desingned to investigate children's knowledge 
of such forms, will be discussed. It will be shown that, at 4 years of age, 
Brazilian children have not acquired "se" and "ele mesmo" completely. The 
complete acquisition of these forms take some time due to some of their 
language-specific aspects.
