« La prière de Manassé », une prière pénitentielle attribuée au roi
Manassé de Juda, connaissait une transmission textuelle riche et complexe.
Parmi ses témoins syriaques, deux versions principales se dégagent: celle
qui apparaît dans la Peshitta et la Didascalie, et un autre qui apparaît
dans le Horologion melkite. Dans cette étude, les auteurs présentent une
comparaison philologique et linguistique détaillée de ces deux versions.
Combinant des outils informatiques ainsi que les méthodes de la philologie
traditionnelle, les textes sont comparés à tous les niveaux linguistiques,
de leur vocabulaire à leur structure discursive, avec un accent
particulier sur leur morphologie et leur syntaxe. Les résultats sont
révélateurs non seulement quant à la question de la relation entre les
deux versions, mais ils éclairent aussi les débats divers concernant la
syntaxe syriaque. Des questions de nature méthodologique, concernant des
techniques qualitatives et quantitatives pour la comparaison textuelle, 
sont également abordées. Avec une introduction approfondie sur l'histoire
textuelle et traditionnelle de cette prière, le livre est un compagnon
naturel pour toute personne intéressée à cette prière remarquable, ainsi
qu'à la linguistique, à la littérature et à la liturgie syriaques.

Résumé en anglais :

‘The Prayer of Manasseh’, a beautiful penitential prayer attributed to
king Manasseh of Judah, has had a rich and complex textual transmission.
Amongst its Syriac textual witnesses, two main versions emerge: one
appearing in the Peshitta and the Didascalia, and another in the Melkite
Horologion. In this study, the authors present a detailed philological and
linguistic comparison of these two versions. Combining state-of-the-art
computational tools together with traditional philology the texts are
compared at all linguistic levels, from their vocabulary up to their
discursive structure, with a special emphasis on their morphology and
syntax. The results are revealing not only as for the question of the
relationship between the two versions, but also illuminate various debates
pertaining to Syriac syntax. Questions of methodological nature regarding
textual comparison using qualitative and quantitative techniques are
addressed as well. Together with the thorough text-historical and
tradition-historical introduction, the book is a natural companion for
anyone interested in this remarkable prayer, as well for anyone interested
in Syriac linguistics, literature and liturgy.
