'Two types of Most: Partitive and Plural Quantification'

I show that most is ambiguous between a partitive and a plural
quantifier, which respectively take DP and NP restrictors. Partitive
most compares the size of part of an entity with the size of the
complement part of that entity. Run-of-the-mill measure units can be
used for particular objects, only ratios can be used for 'measuring'
(parts of) kinds. DP restrictors of most can be singular definite DPs,
mass DPs, plural DPs, kind-referring DP/bare NPs, whereas NP
restrictors are severely constrained: they can only be plural (mass
NPs and singular NPs are illegitimate). Contra Hackl (2009), I show
that, despite their morphological shape, none of the two types of most
can be analyzed as superlative adjectives. Instead, both of them
occupy a Det position in the syntax, which correlates with their
quantificational status.
