Abstract:

Superlative expressions are known to give rise to ambiguities: "Mary
read the longest articles" and "Mary read (the) most articles" can have
an interpretation where the relevant length/number of articles is
independent on who read them, and other interpretations where
alternatives to "Mary read the articles" are considered. How to analyze
these ambiguities has been the subject of some debate. I will present
findings that suggest that scope of "-est" and focus are crucially
involved, and in the case of quantity superlatives with "most", the
interpretation of the underlying "many" plays a role as well.
