face="Lucida Grande" size=3>Malgré le rôle fondamental des traits distinctifs
dans les modèles phonologiques, leurs bases phonétiques restent mal connues.
Les traits sont définis, selon le chercheur, soit dans le domaine
articulatoire, soit dans le domaine acoustique/auditif. Depuis quelques
années, une nouvelle démarche s'est dégagée dans le cadre de la théorie
quantique des traits, développée par K.N. Stevens et ses collaborateurs au
MIT. L'originalité principale de cette théorie est le statut égal qu'elle
accorde aux dimensions acoustique et articulatoire de la langue parlée. Les
traits sont définis par rapport à certaines dimensions articulatoires à
l'intérieur desquelles de petits déplacements de la langue, des lèvres ou des
cordes vocales n'ont pas de conséquences acoustiques ou perceptives
importantes ; c'est-à-dire qu'ils sont définis par des frontières
"naturelles", fondées dans le système articulatoire-perceptif de l'homme. Il
s'agit de l'un des modèles récents qui réussit le mieux à intégrer la
phonétique et la phonologie. Cependant, plusieurs questions restent ouvertes,
et nous avons besoin de nouvelles recherches pour soumettre cette théorie et
des approches apparentées à une vérification empirique
rigoureuse.</FONT></DIV>

jours), les questions suivantes, entre autres, pourraient être soulevées :
Quels sont les traits et comment sont-ils définis ? Pourquoi les traits
exploitent-ils certaines dimensions acoustiques-articulatoires et non pas
d'autres ? Tous les traits ont-ils des frontières quantiques ? Les définitions
des traits varient-elles selon la langue ? Dans quelle mesure les
attributs des traits sont-ils robustes dans des conditions diverses (choix de
locuteur, vitesse du débit, classe de phonème, contexte phonologique ou
prosodique) ? Sous quelles conditions les traits peuvent-ils être renforcés
par des trais ou des gestes supplémentaires ? Quel est le rôle des traits
dans l'acquisition du langage, la reconnaissance lexicale, ou la perception de
la langue maternelle ou d'une langue étrangère ? Quel est leur statut cognitif
? La discussion de ces questions se situera dans diverses perspectives :
phonétique, phonologique, psycholinguistique, neurolinguistique, et
développementale.</FONT></DIV>
