Une langue véhiculaire (LV) est, entre autres, « une langue de contact<BR>
entre individus qui ne partagent ni une langue maternelle ni une culture<BR>
nationale commune » (Alan Firth, 1996). Les LVs s’opposent généralement<BR>
aux langues vernaculaires.<BR>
<BR>
Cette conférence se distinguera du riche mouvement de recherche sur<BR>
l’anglais lingua franca en s’intéressant aux autres LVs (sans l’exclure<BR>
toutefois). Les problématiques suivantes serviront de base à la<BR>
réflexion : que savons-nous des LVs pratiquées actuellement dans le<BR>
monde ? Quels impacts ont-elles sur les rapports entre les individus, la<BR>
communication interculturelle, le discours et l’identité, etc. ?<BR>
<BR>
Cette conférence bilingue internationale se veut être un forum de<BR>
discussion sur les langues véhiculaires. Trois objectifs principaux ont<BR>
été définis :<BR>
<BR>
1. Faire le lien entre les approches théoriques et de recherche sur<BR>
l’utilisation des LVs dans des contextes peu étudiés tels que le<BR>
quotidien (couples binationaux, amis communicant dans une ou des LV/s) ;<BR>
les études (à l’étranger ou chez soi) et le monde du travail (idem).<BR>
<BR>
2. Explorer les impacts de l’utilisation des LVs sur les représentations<BR>
et créations identitaires (soi et autre) d’utilisateurs de LVs, et de<BR>
ceux qui sont témoins de cette utilisation, dans différentes zones<BR>
géographiques, professionnelles et sociales.<BR>
<BR>
3. Stimuler la recherche sur les LVs en s’inspirant, entre autres, des<BR>
recherches et réflexions théoriques sur l’anglais lingua franca.<BR>
<BR>
L’attitude retenue par le comité scientifique face aux LVs est positive.<BR>
Ainsi, elles ne seront ni considérées comme impures, ni comme signes de<BR>
« pertes d’identités ».<BR>
<BR>
Un appel à communications sur les thématiques suivantes est lancé (entre<BR>
autres):<BR>
<BR>
- Simplicité/problèmes de la communication en LV(s) ;<BR>
- Alternance et mélange codique (cf. la « jonglerie verbale » Galisson<BR>
1991) ;<BR>
- Utilisation de plusieurs LVs dans la communication (plurilinguisme) ;<BR>
- Jeux identitaires / revendications identitaires (mises en scène de soi<BR>
et de l’autre) ;<BR>
- Rhétorique sur les LVs (refus/vénération/contradictio<wbr>ns dans les<BR>
discours politiques, officiels,..<wbr>.) ;<BR>
- Représentations et stéréotypes :<BR>
- Représentations d’utilisateurs de LVs sur l’utilisation des LVs<BR>
(co-/constructions des identités) ;<BR>
- Représentations de ceux qui n’utilisent pas des LVs sur les LVs ;<BR>
- Représentations des « non-natifs » sur l’utilisation des LVs ;<BR>
- Représentations des « natifs » sur l’utilisation de leur langue en<BR>
tant que LV ;<BR>
- Représentations des LVs dans le cinéma, la littérature, les médias, etc. ;<BR>
- Aspects de la communication interculturelle dans l’utilisation des LVs.<BR>
<BR>
Les contextes retenus sont le quotidien, le travail et l’éducation. On<BR>
pourra s’intéresser par exemple à l’utilisation de(s) LV(s) dans les<BR>
relations de proximité (amitié, couples...) ; dans les rencontres entre<BR>
étrangers, inconnus ; dans le tourisme, le commerce (shopping,<BR>
compagnies multinationales) ; dans la rue ; dans les salles de classe ;<BR>
par le biais des (nouvelles) technologies.<wbr>..<BR>
<BR>
La conférence est bilingue (français et anglais) mais toute langue<BR>
véhiculaire pourra être traitée.<BR>

A vehicular language (VL) is, among other things, « a contact language<BR>
between persons who share neither a common native tongue nor a common<BR>
national culture » (Alan Firth 1996). VLs are usually opposed to<BR>
vernacular languages.<BR>
<BR>
This conference will distinguish itself from the current rich study of<BR>
English as a Lingua Franca by looking at other languages that serve as<BR>
VL (without excluding it) and find some answers to questions such as:<BR>
What is known of them? What impacts do they have on relationships,<BR>
intercultural communication, discourse and identity, etc.?<BR>
<BR>
This unique bilingual conference will provide a forum for discussing<BR>
vehicular languages. The conference has three main aims:<BR>
<BR>
1. To link emergent theoretical and research approaches to the use of VL<BR>
in under-researched contexts such as close personal relations<BR>
(binational couples/friends communicating in a VL/ in VLs) and daily<BR>
life; studying in VLs (abroad or in one’s own country); working in VLs<BR>
(idem).<BR>
<BR>
2. To explore the impacts of the use of VLs on representations and<BR>
creations of self and otherness of VL users themselves, and of those who<BR>
“witness” this use, in different geographical, professional and social<BR>
contexts.<BR>
<BR>
3. To call for more research on VL other than English by sharing<BR>
theoretical and research achievements on the latter.<BR>
<BR>
The overarching philosophy of the conference is that VLs are neither<BR>
“impure”, nor signs of “lost identities”. The main focuses are discourse<BR>
and language forms.<BR>
<BR>
Research and theoretical papers are invited on any of the following<BR>
themes (among others):<BR>
<BR>
- Easiness/Problems involved in VL communication;<BR>
- Code-switching/<wbr>code-mixing in VL communication (cf. “verbal jugglery”<BR>
Galisson 1991);<BR>
- Use of several VLs in communication (plurilingualism)<wbr>;<BR>
- Rhetorics on VL (rejection/adoratio<wbr>n/contradictory attitudes in<BR>
political, official discourses);<BR>
- Identity games/claims and VL;<BR>
- Representations and stereotypes on VLS:<BR>
- Representations of VL users on the use of VL (co-/construction of<BR>
identities);<BR>
- Representations of non-VL users on the use of VLs;<BR>
- Representations of « native-speakers » on the use of their language as<BR>
a VL;<BR>
- Representations of VLs in cinema, literature, media...;<BR>
- Intercultural communication and VLs.<BR>
<BR>
The contexts of use under scrutiny will be living, working and studying.<BR>
These can include (among others): the use of VL(s) in close<BR>
relationships (friendship, couples, etc.); in daily encounters of<BR>
strangers; in tourism; in business (shopping, multinational companies);<BR>
on the streets; in classrooms; in New Technology..<wbr>.<BR>
<BR>
The conference is bilingual (English and French) but any vehicular<BR>
language can be dealt with.<BR>
