Chronos is a series of conferences dedicated to current research on the<br>
morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of markers of tense, aspect and<br>
modality. The conferences welcome presentations from scholars who approach<br>
linguistic research from different perspectives and embrace different<br>
theoretical frameworks.<br>
<br>
Main Session: morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of markers of tense,<br>
aspect and modality.<br>

Parasession: Endangered & less-documented languages.<br>
<br>
Special associated Workshop: Scalar structure and event structure<br>
<br>
The thematic parasession of Chronos 2009 will be dedicated to the<br>
tense/aspect/<wbr>modality systems of endangered and less-documented languages. Not<br>
only do such languages often face a serious danger of rapid extinction; they<br>
are also a relatively intact source of fecund data, which might shed some new<br>
light on the empirical generalizations and theoretical/<wbr>formal constructs<br>
currently prevalent within the community – indeed, these have generally been<br>
elaborated through observations bearing on a handful of well-documented<br>
languages.<br>
<br>
In addition to this special theme, Chronos 2009 will also include a host<br>
workshop dedicated to the relationship between scalar structure and event<br>
structure (co-organized by U. Paris 7 and U. Chicago): this particular<br>
empirical field has proved very fruitful over the past few years, by nourishing<br>
a wealth of new formal and theoretical approaches to aspectual meaning. The<br>
Chronos 2009 host workshop will constitute a unique opportunity of bringing<br>
together and confronting different recent approaches to the connection between<br>
aspect and scalarity.<br>
<br>
Submissions to the conference are not restricted to the special topics here<br>
listed. We welcome proposals relating to any area in the linguistics of tense,<br>
aspect and modality.<br>

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes for<br>
discussion). All presentations will be delivered in French or in English.<br>

conferences (e.g., LSA, LSRL)<br>
<br>
Abstracts must be anonymous and written in French or in English. They should be<br>
no longer than two pages in length using 1 inch/2.5 cm margins on all sides and<br>
in 12pt font size (Times New Roman preferred). Any non-standard fonts should be<br>
embedded in the PDF document. Submissions are limited to one individual and one<br>
joint abstract per author.<br>

Les colloques Chronos, qui sont organisés tous les deux ans, sont consacrés aux<br>
recherches actuelles sur la morphologie, la syntaxe, la sémantique ou la<br>
pragmatique des temps verbaux, de l'aspect, ou de la modalité. L'objectif des<br>
colloques Chronos est de réunir des chercheurs travaillant dans des<br>
perspectives et des cadres théoriques différents.<br>
<br>
Les précédentes éditions de Chronos se sont déroulées à Austin (2008), Anvers<br>
(2006), Genève (2004), Groningue (2002), Nice (2000), Valenciennes (1998),<br>
Bruxelles (1996) et Dunkerque (1995).<br>
<br>
Session principale : morphologie, syntaxe, sémantique ou la pragmatique des<br>
temps verbaux, de l'aspect, ou de la modalité.<br>
<br>
Session parallèle : langues en danger et moins documentées.<br>
<br>
Workshop associé : structure scalaire et structure événementielle.<br>
<br>
La session thématique de Chronos 2009 sera consacrée aux expressions de temps,<br>
d'aspect, et de modalité dans les langues en danger et moins documentées. Car<br>
non seulement ces langues sont en danger d'extinction à court terme, mais elles<br>
sont aussi une source relativement négligée de données fécondes, qui pourraient<br>
éclairer d'un jour nouveau les généralisations empiriques et construits<br>
théoriques/formels dominants dans la communauté des spécialistes du temps, de<br>
l'aspect et de la modalité ; trop souvent, ces généralisations et ces<br>
construits ont été en effet élaborés à partir d'un petit nombre de langues bien<br>
décrites.<br>
<br>
En plus de cette session thématique, Chronos 2009 comprendra aussi un workshop<br>
consacré à la relation entre structure scalaire et structure événementielle<br>
(co–organisé par l'Université Paris 7 et the University of Chicago) : ce<br>
domaine empirique particulier s'est avéré très fécond au cours des dernières<br>
années, puisqu'il a produit une moisson importantes de travaux théoriques et<br>
formels. Le workshop associé à Chronos 2009 sera une occasion unique de<br>
rassembler et de confronter les différentes approches du calcul aspectuel ainsi<br>
nées.<br>
<br>
Ces deux thèmes n'ont toutefois pas de caractère obligatoire ; toute proposition<br>
portant sur le temps, l'aspect ou la modalité sera la bienvenue.<br>
<br>
Modalités d'envoi des résumés :<br>
<br>
Les communications présentées dureront 20 minutes (avec 10 minutes de<br>
discussion), et seront données en français ou en anglais.<br>
<br>
Priorité sera accordée aux communications originales, i.e. non présentées à<br>
d'autres conférences importantes.<br>
<br>
Les résumés envoyés devront être anonymes, rédigés en français ou en anglais, et<br>
ne pas excéder deux pages de longueur (police Times New Roman 12 points) ; seul<br>
le format PDF sera accepté. Les polices de caractère non-standards devront être<br>
incorporées dans les documents PDF envoyés.<br>
<br>
Un maximum d'un résumé par auteur seul et d'un résumé en collaboration sera<br>
accepté.<br>
