Face à la multiplication des bibliothèques virtuelles et des archives électroniques, la question des échanges fiables de ces données et, plus encore, celle des échanges 'intelligents' (et du multi-linguisme) se posent avec acuité. C'est dans ce
contexte marqué par le web que resurgissent aujourd'hui, dans un sens modifié, des concepts philosophiques tels que l'ontologie ou la sémantique.</div><div>La TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) a été lancée à la fin du vingtième siècle comme projet de recherche international, avec des financements européens, américains, et canadiens pour mettre au point des préconisations communes, afin de représenter les textes sous une forme digitale (qui permette leur lecture par le biais de machines) tout en tenant compte de leurs aspects sémantiques.</div><div>Aujourd'hui TEI n'est plus un projet de recherche: elle fait partie de l'ambiance informatique, au moins pour les sciences humaines et sociales. Elle représente une grammaire incontournable de description des fichiers XML, apportant une garantie sans pareille à la pérennité des documents, à l'interopérabilité avec d'autres systèmes de données et à l'échange entre différentes plateformes
à travers le monde.</div><div>Relancée en 2001 sous la forme d'un consortium, la TEI est maintenant soutenue par les cotisations d'une centaine de sites académiques ou industriels en Europe, aux États Unis, au Japon et ailleurs.</div><div>Cependant le facteur déterminant dans son évolution reste la communauté de ses utilisateurs, et notamment de ceux qui s'occupent de la numérisation du patrimoine humaniste, de l'archivage de la recherche et des échanges d'informations scientifiques.</div><div>Lou BURNARD (né en 1946), a écrit son DEA en littérature anglaise du 19e siècle à Oxford en 1971. Depuis 2002, il est est le Directeur Adjoint des Services informatiques de l'Université d'Oxford. Il s'occupe des applications informatiques dans les domaines des sciences humaines depuis des années, notamment en linguistique de corpus (British National Corpus), en bibliothèque numérique (Oxford Text Archive) et dans la pratique et les principes de
l'encodage de textes. LB est l'un des créateurs de la TEI et il est reconnu comme expert dans le domaine du "text encoding".</div><div><br></div><div>Dans son intervention L. BURNARD présentera les enjeux et la portée de la TEI aujourd'hui, en faisant ressortir l'intérêt de ce système pour l'intégration et l'interopérabilité des ressources numériques dans les SHS.
