<p class="MsoNormal">Il est en général admis dans la
littérature qu’il existe une hiérarchie entre les rôles thématiques, et que
celle-ci est déterminée par la chance qu’a le porteur de tel ou tel rôle
d’accéder à la<span> </span>position de sujet syntaxique.
Dans sa version la plus sommaire, et pour autant que le rôle d’instrument est
concerné, la hiérarchie thématique se basera par exemple sur les faits
suivants :</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">pour postuler que si un agent, un thème et un instrument
sont présents, l’agent occupe la position de sujet, puis vient l’instrument, et
enfin le thème. On considère que le sens du verbe ne change pas quand on passe
de (1) à (2), et que (3) représente la variante non causative de la même racine
verbale à laquelle la « couche causative », à laquelle appartiennent
aussi bien les agents que les instruments, a été ôtée.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Je soutiendrai dans ce qui suit deux thèses distinctes mais
solidaires :</p>

</span></span></span>quand un nom d’instrument se trouve en position
de sujet comme dans (2), il ne porte pas le rôle « instrument », et
le verbe dont il est le sujet est un verbe statif ;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span><span>-<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: normal;font-size: 7pt;font-size-adjust: none;font-stretch: normal;">
</span></span></span>quand un nom d’instrument se trouve appartenir à
un groupe prépositionnel en <i>avec </i>,
dans une phrase à sujet agentif, comme en (1), ce groupe n’est pas un argument
du verbe mais un modifieur adverbial de manière.<span> </span></p>
