d'abord un adverbe qui indique la modalité épistémique de possibilité, il est
clair qu'il est susceptible de déclencher des effets de sens très différents et
que le symbole â—Š, cher aux logiciens, est loin de suffire à la description de
son sémantisme. Pour rendre compte de ses emplois, on défendra l'hypothèse que
<i>peut-être</i> est fondamentalement un
adverbe de phrase polyphonique et argumentatif. En tant qu'adverbe de phrase, il
véhicule un sens montré et il interagit avec la focalisation. On proposera une
analyse polyphonique de <i>peut-être</i> qui
permet d'expliquer le comportement de cet adverbe comme résultant d'une
interaction entre sa sémantique, sa syntaxe et les propriétés des contextes
particuliers dans lesquels il peut être employé. Cette analyse, qui s'inscrit
dans une approche modulaire, permet, comme on le montrera, de mieux saisir les
relations entre des phénomènes relevant de la modalité, de la focalisation, de
la polyphonie et de
l'argumentation.</font></p></font></font>
