Metrical Studies Today: Topics, Tools and Theories<br>

an international conference<br>
hosted by Østfold University College, Halden, Norway<br>
16 - 18 June 2010<br>

The 1st Nordic conference on Metrics was arranged in Gothenburg 1987 under<br>
the heading “Metrics Today”, aiming at gathering Nordic scholars from<br>
various disciplines to show samples of the most vital research within the<br>
field of metrics and versification. A good two decades later it is time to<br>
take stock again: what is the status of Metrical Studies today?<br>
<br>
The conference would like to encourage a discussion of how metrical<br>
studies respond to the developments of contemporary poetry, popular<br>
culture and digitalization as well as to new knowledge and theories within<br>
the fields of cognitive science, semiotics, linguistics, phonology and<br>
aesthetic disciplines such as musicology and performance studies.<br>
<br>
Central questions will be:<br>
In what ways are metrics and concepts of versification affected by recent<br>
developments within cognitive studies?<br>
How can metrics refine its analytical models in order to improve their<br>
explanatory adequacy such as to better account for prosodic variation and<br>
complexity?<br>
What are the impacts of visual and concrete poetry on versification studies?<br>
In what ways has digital technology affected metrical analysis?<br>
To what extent have contemporary cultural phenomena such as hip-hop, rap<br>
and slam poetry re-actualised metrics as a scholarly discipline?<br>
In what ways may new-classical and new-formalist tendencies in<br>
contemporary poetry affect versification studies?<br>
How do translation practice and theory benefit from prosodic knowledge?<br>

Halden is a town situated at the Norwegian-Swedish border<br>

(ca. 200 km) and can easily be reached by train. Most airlines offer<br>
flights to Oslo Airport Gardermoen. Norwegian and Ryanair even have<br>
flights to Moss Lufthavn Rygge (<a href="http://www.en.ryg.no/">http://www.en.<wbr>ryg.no/</a>), located 55 km from<br>
Halden.<br>

Conference fee: ca. 1000 NOK (ca. 120 EURO), dependent on external funding.<br>
