Resumé (English abstract below)<br>
<br>
Cet exposé porte sur les propriétés du déterminant dépendant vreun en
roumain,<br>
qui n’est pas facilement classifiable au vu des typologies existantes
dans la<br>
littérature. En examinant les contextes d’occurrence de vreun (en
particulier<br>
les contextes modaux et les verbes d’attitude), je montre que la
distribution<br>
de vreun est sensible aux alternatives épistémiques du locuteur: vreun
apparaît<br>
seulement dans la portée d’opérateurs propositionnels incompatibles avec
une<br>
situation où la proposition complément est établie comme étant vraie.
Afin de<br>
situer la contrainte épistémique qui régit l’usage de vreun dans une<br>
perspective typologique, je compare sa distribution avec d’autres items
dits<br>
épistémiques, en particulier les items de libre choix existentiels
(Kratzer &<br>
Shimoyama 2002), et les déterminants quelque (Jayez & Tovena 2007)
et algun<br>
(Alonso-Ovalle & Menéndez-Benito 2009). Le roumain présente un
double intérêt<br>
par rapport à cette typologie (encore émergente) : (i) l’existence de
vreun<br>
établit la modalité épistémique comme facteur de légitimation, montrant
ainsi<br>
la nécessité d’approfondir l’examen des facteurs de légitimation
possibles, et<br>
(ii) contrairement à quelque ou algun, vreun présente également un usage
d’item<br>
de polarité négative, propriété qui indique que le recouvrement d’usages
items<br>
de libre choix/item de polarité négative est également présent dans le
domaine<br>
des éléments existentiels. Afin de rendre compte des similarités et des<br>
différences qui existent entre ces différents éléments dépendants et de
dériver<br>
la contrainte épistémique qui régit la distribution de vreun, je défends
une<br>
théorie unitaire de la polarité, en termes d’alternatives, en suivant
Chierchia<br>
(2006 et seq). Cette approche cherche à réduire la variation empirique a
un<br>
ensemble restraint de propriétés sémantiques, en partant de l’hypothèse
que les<br>
différents types de polarité instanciés à travers les langues peuvent
être<br>
dérivés de l’interaction entre les alternatives introduites par les
éléments de<br>
polarité et les inférences qu’elles générent.<br>

Abstract<br>
<br>
This talk focuses on the properties of the Romanian dependent indefinite
vreun,<br>
whose constrained distribution is not easily amenable to known patterns
of<br>
semantic dependency. Examining a wide range of contexts of occurrence
(in<br>
particular modal and attitude verbs), I argue that the distribution of
vreun is<br>
sensitive to epistemic alternatives: vreun can only occur below
operators which<br>
cannot be used in situations where their complement proposition is
established<br>
to be true. Next, I seek to situate this distributional pattern with
respect to<br>
arguably similar items described in the literature, in particular
existential<br>
free-choice items (Kratzer & Shimoyama 2002), and the Romance
determiners<br>
quelque (studied in detail in work by Jayez & Tovena) and algún
(Alonso-Ovalle<br>
& Menéndez-Benito)<wbr>. The interest of vreun with respect to this
emerging<br>
typology is twofold: (i) it provides clear empirical support for the
existence<br>
of a class of dependent items sensitive to epistemic modality only (as
opposed<br>
to modality in general) and (ii) unlike quelque or algún, it also
exhibits a<br>
negative polarity behavior, a property which shows that the
cross-linguistic<br>
split we find between free-choice items that double as negative polarity
items<br>
and free-choice items that don’t (any vs qualsiasi, cualquiera) is also
present<br>
in the realm of existential items. In order to capture the many existing<br>
connections between the (still emerging) patterns of ‘epistemic’
indefinites<br>
and to derive the ‘epistemic constraint’ governing the distribution of
vreun, I<br>
defend a unified alternative-<wbr>based view of polarity sensitivity,
mainly building<br>
on Chierchia (2006 et seq). This account seeks to reduce empirical
variation to<br>
a small set of semantic primitives, by pursuing the hypothesis that the<br>
different patterns of sensitivity can be derived from the interaction
between<br>
the alternatives these items bring about and the inferences they give
rise to.<br>
