<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">L’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres constate une tendance croissante à user exclusivement de la langue anglaise dans les congrès et colloques de certaines sciences humaines organisés en France.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">Ce comportement est illégal, il est regrettable au regard de la position traditionnelle de la langue française, et il donne un fâcheux exemple aux francophones du monde entier. D'autre part, il est défavorable au progrès de la recherche. En effet, la langue n’est pas neutre : elle convoie inévitablement des formes de pensée, surtout dans le domaine des sciences humaines, où la diversité est une richesse. L’usage exclusif d’une seule langue a pour effet un appauvrissement.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">Il importe naturellement que les chercheurs français et francophones participent pleinement à ce qui se fait à l’échelle mondiale. Mais cela n’implique pas qu’ils renoncent à leur langue, qui, au contraire, leur facilite la tâche et accroît leur productivité.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">Il n’est pas difficile de concilier le respect de la langue française et la nécessité de l’intercompréhension. L’Académie appelle à l'observance des règles suivantes, qui découlent de la législation en vigueur:</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">- Le français figure parmi les langues admises dans le programme de chaque rencontre organisée sur le territoire français, et il existe une version ou un résumé en français de tous les documents produits à cette occasion.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">- Les participants français s’expriment oralement en français et, en cas de nécessité, distribuent ou affichent une traduction ou un résumé de leur communication en anglais ou autre langue.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">- Les participants non francophones, en cas de nécessité, s’expriment en une autre langue et distribuent ou affichent une traduction ou un résumé en français.</FONT>
<P class="MsoNormal" style="TEXT-INDENT: 35.4pt;"><FONT face="Times New Roman" color="#0000ff" size="5">Quant aux publications, l'Académie invite les chercheurs français à s'y exprimer en français, en accompagnant leurs textes, si nécessaire, d'une traduction ou d'un résumé en anglais ou autre langue.</FONT>
