linguistique est centrale dans des problématiques très diverses : elle
fait partie des notions couramment invoquées dans tous les domaines de notre
discipline. On peut en effet explorer les liens entre modalité et lexique (y
a-t-il une classe de morphèmes lexicaux à valeur modale ?), entre modalité
et morphosyntaxe (peut-on réduire l’étude de la modalité à la classe fermée des
verbes/auxiliaires modaux ?), ou encore entre modalité et (phono)syntaxe
(doit-on se cantonner au cadre de la grammaire de la phrase et de ses modalités
sur les plans syntaxique et phonologique ?). Au croisement de la
morphosyntaxe et de la (phono)syntaxe se pose également la question du rapport
entre les modes (indicatif, subjonctif, impératif, participe et
infinitif ; avec quelle place pour le conditionnel ?) et la modalité.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="FR"><span> </span>Comme on le voit, on se heurte
rapidement à la difficulté de proposer une définition stable, ou un domaine
d’application unifié, de la modalité. Une telle notion semble devoir
s’appréhender à partir de perspectives linguistiques multiples, et donc être
traitée sous l’angle des modalités au pluriel. Dans ce cas, sur quels critères
peut-on établir une typologie des modalités ? </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="FR"><span> </span>Les modalités posent des problèmes

charge – degré de certitude et degré d’engagement des énonciateurs. Elles sont
donc des composantes importantes de toute théorie de l’énonciation. Par
ailleurs, les modalités se voient attribuer des marqueurs linguistiques plus ou
moins spécialisés conventionnellement pour chacune d’entre elles. Mais les
énoncés, selon le contexte discursif où ils sont proférés, peuvent aussi
revêtir des modalités étrangères aux emplois conventionnels des marqueurs
qu’ils contiennent. Les modalités deviennent alors indirectes. Les modalités
peuvent donc aussi être analysées dans un cadre théorique qui relève de la
sémantique et de la pragmatique. </span></p>

parer au risque d’éclatement des catégories modales, sur l’opération mentale
qui sous-tend l’activité langagière des sujets dans le cadre ainsi posé des
modalités, à savoir l’opération de modalisation. Qu’est-ce que modaliser ?
Que modalise-t-on ? Sur quels plans ? Comment modalise-t-on ?
Dans quel(s) but(s) ? Peut-on s’abstenir de modaliser ? Modalise-t-on
de la même façon d’une langue à l’autre, d’une variété de langue à une autre,
d’un état de langue à un autre ? Quels procédés techniques doit-on mettre
en œuvre dans le domaine de la traduction, dans le domaine de l’apprentissage
d’une langue étrangère en milieu scolaire ? </span></p>
