Le 3 juin 1911, le grammairien et historien de la langue française, Ferdinand Brunot, crée les Archives de la Parole à la Sorbonne, avec l'aide de l'industriel Emile Pathé. Première collection institutionnelle d’archives sonores créée en France, elles ont pour vocation d’enregistrer grâce au phonographe, et de conserver pour les générations futures, toutes les manifestations de la voix parlée. Guillaume Apollinaire, Alfred Dreyfus, Emile Durkheim, Cécile Sorel et bien d’autres ont ainsi laissé une trace sonore de leur voix. Mais Ferdinand Brunot va également aller « sur le terrain » enregistrer les patois et dialectes « qui se meurent ». En 1912, il parcourt les Ardennes ; en 1913, le Berry et le Limousin. La journée d’études du 17 juin évoque la genèse de ces archives sonores et leur devenir aujourd’hui.<br>
