Université de Grenoble Stendhal) vise à ouvrir pour la première
fois les thématiques de la revue sur celle de la typologie.
L’objectif est de réunir des travaux de description qui
incorporent des outils théoriques et méthodologiques qui ont été
particulièrement développés dans une démarche
fonctionnelle-typologique. Ce numéro s’adressera à un lectorat
de linguistes non spécialistes en typologie ; il s’agit donc de
réunir un panel de travaux assez large et représentatif.</span></p>

objectif de mettre en lumière les différences et similarités qui
existent entre les langues, selon certains critères. Au-delà de
la simple taxinomie, la construction d’une typologie se fonde
sur la mise en lumière des similarités de construction et des
schémas de variation qui ne sont visibles qu’à l’échelle
translinguistique. Ce rôle de la typologie est fondamental, car
il permet de dégager universaux et grandes tendances
linguistiques, que d’autres méthodes ne permettent pas
d’observer et surtout d’appréhender. De façon plus cruciale, la
linguistique typologique permet de dégager des restrictions sur
des schémas de variation ; ces restrictions suggèrent
l’existence de contraintes, sous-tendues par des facteurs
internes et externes et dont on se doit de rechercher
l’explication.</span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">La typologie fonctionnelle ou approche
fonctionelle-typologique est une approche non générative qui a
été majoritairement appliquée en morphosyntaxe.<br>
Elle est fonctionnelle dans le sens où les schémas
translinguistiques, les “types” qu’elle dégage, peuvent être
articulés autour de domaines fonctionnels spécifiques. Par sa
visée explicative et non uniquement descriptive (“West Coast
Functionalism”, tel que Givon 2001[1984]), elle incorpore de
facto l’analyse des phénomènes de grammaticalisation en partant
du principe que “toute structure attestée en synchronie est le
résultat d’une dynamique diachronique, elle-même motivée par de
nouvelles fonctions émergentes.” (Imbert 2008 : 13 ; après
Svorou 1994, Givon 2001[1984], DeLancey 2001ms). Cette
perspective dynamique sur la description prend naturellement en
compte la notion de gradience des catégories conceptuelles et
grammaticales (notions de continuum et de prototype, e.g. Lakoff
1987 ; Givón, ibid.).<br>
Cette inspiration fonctionnelle est venue préciser dans
plusieurs travaux récents le caractère typologique avec lequel
il s’articule : il s’agit de mener une démarche de description
typologique des langues (cf. notamment Creissels 2006), une
stratégie descriptive qui prône l’interaction possible et
nécessaire entre connaissances typologiques et description d’une
langue. La typologie ne doit ainsi ni précéder ni suivre la
description, mais en faire partie intégrante, dans une relation
non hiérarchique d’ « aller et retour » de l’une vers l’autre.
Cette démarche est à distinguer : (a) des approches contrastives
en général limitées à des langues génétiquement proches et se
situant parfois à l’interface de la linguistique appliquée (tel
que commenté par Söres 2008) ; (b) des approches comparatistes à
vocation typologique (Lazard 2001), dans lesquelles l’analyse
typologique est postérieure à la description; (c) des approches
typologiques originellement issues de Greenberg, des approches
développées dans des groupes de travail tels que le Surrey
Morphology Group (typologie canonique, Corbett 2007) ou encore
le Projet WALS (Haspelmath et al. (eds.) 2005). Dans ces
travaux, l’élaboration d’une typologie constitue un cadre qui
définit des “types”, dans lesquels une langue ou une contruction
doit être classée ; dans ces approches essentiellement
taxinomiques, la place d’une construction dans l’ensemble du
système de la langue n’est donc pas le point central de l’étude
– cette place étant au contraire mise en avant dans une
description typologique. </span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Cette approche
fonctionnelle-typologique a jusqu’à présent été essentiellement
appliquée à un niveau morphosyntaxique de description ;
cependant, des travaux récents en phonétique et phonologie se
positionnent dans une perspective similaire, bien que le terme
“fonctionnel” ne soit généralement pas utilisé à ce niveau
d’analyse. Ces travaux (e.g. Lindblom et Maddieson 1988 ;
Maddieson 1984, 2010 ; Mairano 2011 ; Rousset 2004 ; Vallée et
al. 2002, Vallée et al. 2009) incluent une problématique de
schémas translinguistiques, d’universaux et de contraintes
sous-tendues par des facteurs internes et externes (par exemple
contraintes de perception-production, contraintes
aérodynamiques), ou encore de continuum d’évolution (Blevins
2004). </span></p>
