In other words, we make generalisations about<br><br>how people use language. Historically, the difference has been that Discourse Analysis looked in very<br><br>close detail at small samples, developing tools accordingly, and Corpus Linguistics took a more coarse<br><br>grain approach to large samples, developing different analytical tools.<br><br><br>However, recent years have seen methodological and analytical convergence. More and more often<br><br>corpus linguists are concerned with subtle semantic and pragmatic questions and more and more often<br><br>discourse analysts are employing quantitative methods more typical of corpus research. This conference<br><br>hopes to bring the two groups closer together, to learn from each other, on the common ground of<br><br>epistemic modality.<br><br><br>Epistemic modality, in the broad sense, is one of the most complex linguistic phenomena. Its expression<br><br>bridges and integrates lexical, morphological, syntactic, prosodic, and discursive structures in language.<br><br>It is a central domain of research in Discourse Analysis and is becoming an important field in Corpus<br><br>Linguistics. This conference brings together the two analytical traditions with the aims<br><br><br>- develop usage-based methodology<br><br>- explain and describe epistemic modality<br><br><br>Modality - from mental predicates and epistemic adjectives, through modal auxiliaries and infixes,<br><br>grammatical voice and transitivity, to the complexities of intonation and gesticulation, crosses most<br><br>traditional boundaries of language analysis. This will cover overheads and coffee but not lunch.<br><br><br><br>Abstract Submission<br><br>The study of epistemic representation in and across all languages is welcome, as well as diachronic,<br><br>variationist, contrastive and typological research. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are also<br><br>welcome, the only criterion being that analysis be based upon 'found' natural language and the method<br><br>employed be explicitly considered.<br><br><br>Abstracts of 500 words in total are solicited.
