Leur intérêt réside dans leur statut mixte, au carrefour de la flexion et de la dérivation, et de leur « participation » à la fois du domaine nominal-adjectival et du domaine verbal. Leur nature défective dans un grand nombre de langues, à laquelle correspond une morphologie riche dans d'autres langues, soulève des questions aussi bien sur l'architecture de la phrase que sur celle du mot. Dans cette présentation je mets en perspective plusieurs problèmes soulevés par les participes, avec une attention spéciale portée sur le soi-disant « participe passé/parfait » à travers les langues. J'explore notamment des pistes pour une analyse unifiée des participes (dans les contextes de parfait, passif adjectival et dans la nominalisation) utilisant des intuitions récentes sur leur structure dans le cadre des approches syntaxiques à la formation des mots.<br><br><b>Abstract</b><br>In the theory of grammar, participles remain a mysterious area, usually defined in a negative way. Their interest lies in their mixed status, at the confluence of inflection and derivation, and their "participating" both in the nominal-adjectival and verbal domains. Their defective nature in a broad range of languages, to which corresponds a rich morphology in other languages, is intriguing as it raises questions about the (functional) architecture of sentences and of words as well. This presentation provides an overview of some of the issues participles are involved in, with a special emphasis on the structure of the so-called "past/perfect participle" across languages.
