« “The universal and the particular in sign language prosody” »<br>

Résumé :<br>
How universal is prosody? The physical instantiation of prosody in the sign modality is quite different from its spoken language counterpart, affording the system a large number of independent articulators. Yet research has shown that the prosodic systems of sign languages are similar in important ways to those of spoken languages formally, functionally, and architecturally. As in spoken languages, rhythmic and intonational cues systematically mark different kinds of utterances and relationships between parts of complex utterances. Modality specific similarities also exist across sign languages. Many sign languages use the same limited number of prosodic signals in the same way, for instance, raised brows for yes/no questions, just as many spoken languages use high tone. What is universal across modalities and what is universal within the sign modality? <br>
<br>
I will address the issue of universality by tracing the development of a prosodic system in a new sign language – Al Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language -- and by comparing the crystallized systems of two established sign languages – ASL and ISL. I will show that the culling and coordination of signals to create a grammatical system does not come for free, and that, in the process, language particular forms arise. The differences from spoken language expose the active role of the body in shaping grammar. The similarities lay bare details of the system that human language cannot do without. <br>
