<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Palatino Linotype";">Le consensus à
la fin du 20ème siècle était que toutes les langues sont de complexité
équivalente. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Palatino Linotype";">On croyait en
cette hypothèse pour trois raisons, qui découlent de l'humanisme, du traitement
du langage, et des considérations internes à la théorie. Mais chacune de
ces raisons comporte des défauts assez graves.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Palatino Linotype";">Je discute la
possibilité que les langues peuvent se différencier en termes de complexité
ainsi qu'en termes de difficultés pour formuler une mesure de complexité

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Palatino Linotype";">Mon objectif
est d'explorer le traitement des phénomènes typologiques rares en syntaxe
formelle. Je présenterai trois stratégies traditionnellement utilisées pour en
rendre compte, stratégies illustrées par des exemples concrets, et je me
tournerai ensuite vers une évaluation de ces stratégies. Les trois stratégies
sont les suivantes :<br>
(A) Réductionniste. Le phénomène
rare peut être dérivé de l'interaction entre des processus reconnus pour être
largement répandus dans les langues du monde.<br>
(B) Stipulation sur la Grammaire Universelle
(GU). La théorie est structurée de manière à ce que la rareté d'un phénomène
soit prédite.<br>
(C) Stipulation interne à la
langue. Les phénomènes rares sont en dehors du domaine des Principes et
Paramètres de la GU
et sont attribués à des règles propres à une ou plusieurs langues données.<br>
L'option réductionniste (A) et la stipulation interne à la langue (C)
apparaissent toutes deux comme des stratégies séduisantes, la stratégie
