Résumé<br>
L’expression du mouvement fait l’objet de nombreuses études dans le<br>
domaine de l’espace. Peu de travaux ont examiné l’interaction de ce<br>
domaine avec celui de la temporalité en psycholinguistique. La thèse<br>
aborde deux questions : comment la spatialité et la temporalité sont<br>
imbriquées dans le discours ; l’incidence des propriétés spécifiques des<br>
langues dans l’acquisition d’une langue seconde. L’analyse tient compte<br>
des différences typologiques entre l’anglais et le français, dans le<br>
domaine de l’espace (cadrage satellitaire vs. verbal). De plus, la thèse<br>
teste plusieurs hypothèses concernant l’émergence de la morphologie<br>
verbale en L2. L’analyse porte sur des productions d’adultes anglophones<br>
apprenants du français, comparées à celles de natifs des deux langues,<br>
dans deux tâches centrées sur le mouvement provoqué. Les locuteurs de<br>
l’anglais expriment systématiquement la cause et la manière dans le verbe,<br>
et la trajectoire dans la constellation du verbe principal, qui devient le<br>
centre sémantique de l’expression de bornes temporelles. Les locuteurs du<br>
français montrent des variations dans l’expression des composantes du<br>
mouvement provoqué, située soit dans le verbe soit dans sa constellation,<br>
variations qui sont en partie liées à la contrainte d’expression de la<br>
télicité dans le verbe. Les apprenants encodent cause et manière dans le<br>
verbe, et peu la trajectoire et bornent le plus souvent les événements par<br>
la morphologie verbale au premier niveau. Avec le développement de la L2,<br>
ils intègrent graduellement les schémas de la langue cible. Enfin, les<br>
résultats montrent que le contexte discursif joue un rôle dans le choix de<br>
la morphologie verbale par tous les locuteurs.<br>

Abstract:<br>
"Time and space in second language acquisition: typological constraints in<br>
the acquisition of the French by English adults."<br>
A growing number of studies have examined the expression of motion events<br>
in the spatial domain. However, few have focused on how this domain<br>
interacts with the domain of temporality, including during second language<br>
acquisition (SLA). The thesis aims to address two main questions: how<br>
space and time are interrelated; whether language-specific properties have<br>
an impact on the SLA. Particular attention is placed on the implications<br>
of typological factors in English and French (as satellite- vs.<br>
verb-framed languages) in the spatial domain. In addition, the thesis<br>
tests several hypotheses concerning the emergence of verbal morphology in<br>
SLA. The analyses examine the acquisition of French by English adult<br>
learners by means of two tasks that served to elicit verbalizations about<br>
motion events. English natives speakers show the lexicalization pattern of<br>
S-framed languages: they encode manner and cause in the verb, and path in<br>
the network of the verb, where utterances are often bounded. French native<br>
speakers show variations in the distribution of these three main<br>
components of motion events as a result of the boundary constraint that is<br>
typical of verbs in V-framed languages. The learners express cause and<br>
manner in the verb and express at first localisations. At the first level<br>
of proficiency, they bound their utterances by means of verbal morphology.<br>
With the development of their L2, they gradually integrate the<br>
lexicalization pattern of the target language. Finally, discourse context<br>
plays an important role in how all speakers use verbal morphology. It<br>
shows how learners partially integrate the spatial and verbal markings of<br>
the L2 to express motion in discourse.<br>
