Les nombreuses reconstructions proposées par les défenseurs del'hypothèse « altaïque » n'ont pas pu convaincre les spécialistes deslangues concernées en raison notamment des nombreuses erreurs, d'ordre aussibien méthodologique que factuel, dont elles sont émaillées. Aussi, et malgré lapublication récente d'un « Dictionnaire étymologique des languesaltaïques » (<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Starostin</span> &al. 2003), il serait prudent de ne pas essayer de rattacher le japonais et lecoréen à un ensemble vide, et encore moins de le remplir à leurs dépens.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:21.0pt;"><span style="color:black;" lang="FR">D'autre part, la parentéimmédiate entre le japonais et le coréen est loin d'avoir été prouvée de façonsatisfaisante au regard de la méthode comparative. Ceci contraste nettementavec l'intime conviction qu'il s'agit de deux langues « sœurs »,partagée par de nombreux chercheurs qui se sont penchés sur la question depuisbientôt plus de deux siècles.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:21.0pt;"><span style="color:black;" lang="FR">Dans le cadre de laprésente présentation, nous passerons en revue les principaux défis auxquelsrestent confrontés les chercheurs qui travaillent sur l'épineuse question de laparenté de ces deux langues.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:21.0pt;"><span style="color:black;" lang="FR">Après un bref aperçu dequelques hypothèses sur la parenté entre le japonais et le coréen, unecomparaison typologique nous montrera les limites des similitudes observées ensynchronie. Nous présenterons également les données dont nous disposons pournotre travail en diachronie.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:21.0pt;"><span style="color:black;" lang="FR">Ensuite, nous nousinterrogerons sur l'existence de paradigmes morphologiques irréguliers, un desrares indices sûrs d'une éventuelle parenté génétique lorsqu'ils sont partagés(<span style="font-variant:small-caps;">Meillet</span> 1982). A défaut, nousprésenterons quelques comparaisons mettant en jeu la morphologie régulière.Quant au lexique, nous constaterons que les nombreux « cognats »proposés et qui obéissent à des lois phonétiques cohérentes semblent êtreplutôt des emprunts qui relèvent du vocabulaire « culturel ».</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:21.0pt;"><span style="color:black;" lang="FR">En conclusion, nousdresserons un bilan provisoire de ce que nous sommes en mesure de dire sur laparenté entre le japonais et le coréen, ainsi que des problèmes sur lesquels ilnous est impossible de trancher en l'état actuel des données et de nosconnaissances sur l'histoire de ces langues.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="FR"> </span></p>
