Elles présentent un double intérêt théorique et méthodologique du fait de leur système complexe d’alternances consonantiques. Les consonnes initiales sont groupées en séries de 2 ou 3 ‘degrés’, qui partagent le même point d’articulation mais diffèrent par le mode d’articulation. Le choix du degré de la consonne initiale dépend notamment de la classe nominale. Ainsi, lorsque les classes diffèrent, on peut observer des correspondances phonétiques qui ne sont pas le résultat de changements phonétiques : un /l/ peut correspondre à /l/, /d/ ou /nd/ ! Il est donc difficile de s’appuyer sur des comparaisons externes pour valider des hypothèses.
