s’intéressant de plus en plus explicitement aux manifestations linguistiques
d’identités pan-ethniques en voie de formation, la sociolinguistique s’est
surtout focalisée sur l’Europe urbaine, et relativement peu sur les contextes
urbains post-coloniaux, alors qu’elle pourrait y découvrir des indicateurs
appréciables de nation-building. Afin d’illustrer ce rôle que pourrait jouer la
sociolinguistique, je propose une étude de cas portant sur la Namibie, un pays
africain portant les stigmates d’un héritage ségrégationniste articulé en
termes ethnolinguistiques. Sur la base d’un corpus d’interactions
interethniques expérimentalement mises sur pied à Windhoek, la capitale,
j’identifie et décris les dynamiques linguistiques de convergence et de
divergence/maintien d’une à l’autre combinaison interethnique d’interlocuteurs.
Sur la base des schémas d’alternance codique observés durant ces interactions,
j’identifie tout d’abord les symptômes d’une dichotomie linguistique générale
entre namibiens blancs et non-blancs. J’identifie également les
symptômes d’un registre stylistique pan-ethnique partagé par les groupes
non-blancs, mais dont la variation interne reflète tout de même les divisions

approches méthodologiques et cadres théoriques pertinents (analyse de discours,
