La métaphonie italo-romane est connue généralement en tant que
processus d’harmonie régressive comportant le rehaussement ou la
diphtongaison des voyelles moyennes accentuées, déclenché par de
voyelles hautes atones qui suivent. Dans cette présentation je
montre que, dans les dialectes italo-romans des Abruzzes
(regroupement du Haut-Sud), les processus métaphoniques incluent
aussi la métaphonie progressive de la voyelle basse déclenchée par
de voyelles hautes atones qui précédent, ainsi que la palatalisation
régressive des voyelles accentuées induite par <i class="moz-txt-slash"><span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span>i<span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span></i> atone. En outre, dans les
Abruzzes, il est possible de rencontrer des dialectes où les
voyelles hautes <i class="moz-txt-slash"><span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span>i<span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span></i> et <i class="moz-txt-slash"><span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span>u<span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span></i>
semblent participer à des alternances métaphoniques, alors qu’en
principe des voyelles hautes ne peuvent pas être cible de processus
de rehaussement. Je montre que dans ces derniers cas il s’agit de
métaphonies apparentes et je propose une analyse qui rend compte de
ces alternances déconcertantes. L’analyse des processus
métaphoniques progressifs et palatalisants, qui, à ma connaissance,
n’avait pas été conduite avant, fait émerger une connexion entre la
rétrogradation de l’élément A du rôle de tête et la création
d’espace syllabique vide. En exploitant cette connexion, je propose
une analyse du phénomène métaphonique régressive originaire, typique
des stades anciens de la plupart des dialectes italo-romans. Cette
proposition rend compte de deux faits qui restent mystérieux dans
les propositions précédentes : la résistance de <i class="moz-txt-slash"><span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span>a<span class="moz-txt-tag">/</span></i> à la métaphonie régressive et
le fait que la diphtongaison métaphonique concerne uniquement les
voyelles mi-ouvertes.
