Recording audio with digital video

This question is similar to Nick's question on hard disk recording.

I spent some time looking into hard disk recording, but have recently had
someone recommend that I use a digital video recorder to record my audio
data. From what I can understand, the Pros and Cons for recording to miniDV
would be roughly the same as Simon Musgrave wrote regarding hard disk
recorders - except that with miniDV there would be the added functionality
of video recording, and minus the large hard disk.

Has anyone out there had experience recording audio using miniDV? Is the
audio recording good quality? How easy is it to extract the sound file from
the video file? Would you recommend it as a tool for linguistic fieldwork?

Thanks,

reliable? What kind of soundfile do they create? I hear the advantage of
FlashRam recorders like the Marantz PMD series is the absence of moving
parts, but they also have disadvantages like limited recording time and
expensive media.
