I just want to add to Nick's comments a bit.

If you're writing a grant proposal for funds to buy equipment,
ask for the best: the Edirol or some other device that records
in wav format, with enough flash memory cards to get you through
a day of recording. This is the format preferred by all archivists,
and funders know that. They will appreciate the fact that you are
concerned about the longevity of the work you are planning to do
with their money!
