Directional vs. omni directional microphones

Hi all:

I am purchasing equipment to record oral history interviews where both
the interviewee and the interviewer need to be recorded for long periods
of time

I have thought of using an omni directional microphone on a stand
(instead of having a microphone for each speaker). Either that or rely
on the built in microphone in whichever decent digital recorder I
purchase.

What are people's experiences of recording with two or more speakers and
using microphones?

Is the built in microphone in the recorder likely to be enough?

Regards:

Rachel
