Inaugural Linguistics in the Pub

Dear Friends in Melbourne on the RNLD List,

Best wishes on the inauguration of Linguistics in the Pub! 

May your first meeting be a time of good, healthy discussion on the papers
in the latest issue of Language on "SIL International and the disciplinary
culture of linguistics"--particularly as those articles relate to language
documentation.

I personally appreciate the lengths to which Lise Dobrin and the editorial
staff of Language went to insure a variety of perspectives in the articles,
and to provide a professional, balanced, fair-minded discussion of the
issues. As members of a faith-based organisation, SIL staff will naturally
hold certain distinctive views-for example, that all people and all
languages are of inherent worth because they reflect something of the
marvelous, creative character of God. Such a view leads us to some common
ground with other members of this RNLD list-that linguistic diversity is
something to be celebrated.

As a non-profit educational corporation committed to "service to all", we
remain ready to serve, share with and work alongside those who speak and
seek to promote the world's many indigenous languages.

An occasional gathering of linguists in Melbourne, organised by RNLD

of SIL in language documentation (see Language - Volume 85, Number
3,September 2009).
