animation

Hi

We've had good results with Boinx Istopmotion, but you need to create the
artworks yourself (the items that are animated) it doesn't do this for you,
like say Marvin does. However, lots of flexibility in what you can create,
we have had a number of workshops where small groups of individuals create
people and animals in plasticine and paper, spend a half-hour or so moving
and photographing them, them adding a voiceover. Quick and easy on the
technical level, the hard work is in the artwork and ideas (as it should be
really).

The software is for Mac, not free, but you can download a trial. Not too
expensive for the express version (I think under 250 AUD for the 5 user
family licence).

Also need a camera that talks to the software, most (all?) recent dv cams,
and many, certainly not all digital still cameras (Nikon and Canon are
best - there is a list of compatible cameras on the Boinx site).

Other gear required - tripod, lights audio gear if recording later (can also
use preexisting recording). There are a few tricks in getting light, focus
and white balance with the camera, basically, use manual settings on the
camera.

btw, also unimpressed by Marvin, very rigid parameters and can't even export
it to dvd format, making it pretty useless as a way of distributing
resources.

Cheers

PS Nick if you are interested I can send you DVD with some short films made
last year

As it happens, the following ad came up with this email conversation:

  Create 3D Animations Now
How To Create 3D Animations That Even Pixar Would Be Proud Of..
  www.3DMagix.com

It looks like an amazing program and is currently on offer for $US47.00.
Does anyone have the time and technical knowledge to test it? Please.
  Colleen.

I agree: it is cute, but pretends to do what is impossible, ie have
someone appear to speak a language they don't actually speak. Much hype, and
it was shown to the NT DEET Executive some years ago, who were mightily
impressed. I will say no more.

      Hello All
I would also be interested in the responses to this. Last year I
attended two 'training' courses for Marvin but I'm still not sure it's worth
the effort, cute as it is. To get certain effects, eg NT Uncle singing
along with a few other guitarists I was advised it is necessary to make
multiple videos and import another character each time. And you lose the
sync with the audio and actions doing this. Also, other characters can't
remain sitting while another is singing etc. I felt it was still a work in
progress that I'd keep an eye on. A week or so ago it appeared that there
have been some updates but my email with some questions still remains
unanswered. A good idea but frustrating in my book.

I'm interested in making some animated stories and wonder if anyone

would really like a Mac application if possible.

        thanks,
