Announcement

Linguistics in the Pub (LIP) September 2011
Organised by RNLD http://www.rnld.org

*Topic: Using video in language documentation*
Most of us use video in our language documentation but how exactly do we use
it? The aim of this session is to discuss ideas about to use video.
Participating in the session will be Joe Blythe (Max Planck Institute for
Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen) and Jenny Green (University of Melbourne). Joe
has written about his thoughts on how to record naturalistic conversation
using video for the Endangered Languages and Cultures blog while Jenny has
developed new techniques for recording gestures and handsigns in Central
Australia.

Suggested readings (to be made available on the RNLD events page)*

The iltyem-iltyem project aims to record and document traditional handsigns
used by people in Central Australia. Iltyem-iltyem is a rich and expressive
way of communicating, and is used by Aboriginal people from all language
groups in Central Australia.

LIP is an occasional gathering of language activists and linguists in
Melbourne. All are welcome. Those in other parts of Australia and the
world who can't make it to the Melbourne LIPs are encouraged to
organise a local gathering to discuss this topic and support language
activities in your area.
