Planning is well underway to develop an Open Universities Australia unit in Gamilaraay language. The course, likely to be offered in 2014, is being organised by Professor John Simons, Executive Dean in the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University, and John Giacon, who has been involved in Gamilaraay and Yuwaalaraay for some 16 years. The course will build on Speaking Gamilaraay 1, which Giacon taught at the Koori Centre, University of Sydney, from 2005 till 2011, and which will be offered at the Koori Centre in 2013, when it will also offer Speaking Gamilaraay 2 for the first time. Macquarie University has extensive experience in on-line language courses, currently teaching 11 languages on line.

The Gamilaraay course will make it much easier for people to learn language, and in particular will be very valuable for those wishing to teach Gamilaraay. It is hoped to make elements of the course freely available on line, so that all Gamilaraay people, and others, are able to learn the language more easily.

In the longer term it is hoped to offer on-line courses in other Australian languages and perhaps to offer a Diploma in Australian languages.
