Dear RNLDers

Nominees for the fine arts and artisan categories of the ARIA Awards 2013 were announced this week, and among them is...

Ngambala Wiji li-Wunungu - Together We Are Strong, the double CD by Shellie Morris and the Borroloola Songwomen (ABC Music / Barkly Regional Arts 2013). This prestigious nomination is in addition to a swag of other accolades that the album has picked up, including, most recently, Winner: 2013 National Indigenous Music Awards - Song of the Year (for 'li-Anthawirriyarra a-Kurija').

The double album showcases songs in Yanyuwa, Marra, Garrwa and Gudanji - of natural phenomena on country, ancestral journeys, funny incidents; as well as new collaborative songs (with Shellie Morris) in Yanyuwa and Gudanji. Transcriptions and translations of the lyrics are included in the CD booklet.

Here in Borroloola, 'li-Anthawirriyarra' has become the local anthem sung by kids all across town. Ngukurr Language Centre staff play the album as they drive about, people at the Cultural Olympiad in London earlier this year heard Shellie singing in Yanyuwa, and Leanne Norman, Yanyuwa linguist, says that everyone in Borroloola is standing taller as a result of this album.

So on behalf of the album's production team and all of the singers and musicians, I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank and congratulate the core translators, interpreters and linguists for their invaluable contributions to the album and sharing of Yanyuwa, Marra, Garrwa and Gudanji with a truly wide audience: Leanne Norman, Mavis Muluwumara Timothy, Joanne Miller, John Bradley, Cherry Wulumirr Daniels, Leonie Murrungun, Maureen Marranggulu Thompson, Betty Naburrurluyurr Roberts, Bessie Numamurdirdi, Topsy Numamurdirdi, Greg Dickson, Ilana Mushin, Topsy Inganjuba Green, Rachel Nordlinger, and three people who sadly are no longer with us.

Have a listen if you haven't already (iTunes, ABC shops and all good music stores), and view the backstory on the project's (now static) blog: http://songpeoples.tumblr.com/ and the album's publicity via Shellie's website: http://www.shelliemorris.net/songwomen.html
