[RNLD] Metadata for non-XML users

Hi all,

I'm wondering what format and program you all would recommend to those who
are not familiar with XML but need to record lasting metadata.
Spreadsheets can be made to be very comprehensive, and might be a good
option...but of course there's the concern of choosing a non-proprietary
software program (i.e., not Microsoft Excel), and also the problem that the
original formatting must remain unchanged in order for the information to
still make sense (i.e., if the data doesn't render correctly and you can't
tell what goes in which column, it won't be useful).

Furthermore, pardon my ignorance, but are the 15 Dublin Core metadata
elements (http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/) still considered the
minimum standard for what metadata collections should include? Or are
there other standards out there too?

I'm specifically hoping for user-friendly ideas that both specialists and
laypeople alike could be content with.

Many thanks!
Amanda
