Dear RNLDers,

in the budget statement released last night by Australia's Federal
Government Treasurer, Minister Hockey announced that the Indigenous
Languages Support Programme (ILS) will be reduced by $9.5 million over four
years.

The link to the relevant budget document can be found here <
http://www.budget.gov.au/2014-15/content/bp2/html/bp2_expense-05.htm>. This
outlines cuts of $2.3 million in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016, $2.4 million in
2016-2017 and $2.5 million in 2017-2018. The reductions will be taken from
the 2013‑14 Budget measure Creative Australia — Indigenous Languages
Support Programme expansion.

The ILS will continue to receive funding of $11.1 million per year.

This distressing measure will impact the programs that are doing invaluable
work to revitalise Australia's languages, and the many communities and
groups that are seeking funding to strengthen and maintain their languages.

kind regards,
Margaret
