*Announcement: Linguistics in the Pub in London (LIPIL)** Tuesday 10th
November 2015** - Language Documentation in your lunch-break? Doing urban
fieldwork *

Language documentation has been traditionally thought of as occurring in
distant (sometimes exoticised) locations, but in recent years there has
been a growing interest in the possibilities for this sort of research in
large urban centres that teem with linguistic diversity. Cities such as
London offer many opportunities for working with speakers of
under-described languages, but approaches towards urban language
documentation need to be carefully considered. This LIPIL session focuses
on how urban fieldwork with diaspora groups differs from the traditional
model of linguistic fieldwork, the particular challenges and also possible
advantages of urban fieldwork, and ways in which our methods and goals can,
and should, be adapted in this setting.

LIPIL is an occasional gathering of language activists and linguists in
London and serves as an informal forum for the discussion of languages,
linguistics and related issues. We meet roughly once a month and discuss a
selected theme or issue. LIPIL is coordinated by Lauren Gawne (SOAS,
University of London) and is open to everyone who is interested. A summary
of the discussion is posted on the Endangered Languages and Cultures blog
<http://www.paradisec.org.au/blog/>. You can also Tweet on the night with
the #LIPIL <https://twitter.com/search?q=%23LIPIL&src=typd> hashtag.
