*Announcement: **Linguistics in the pub in London (LIPIL)* *Tuesday** 1st
November 2016 – **Popular representations of linguistics*

Linguistics in the popular consciousness and popular media has a number of
faces. This month's LIPIL discussion will be sharing and deconstructing
some of the metaphors, images, topics, themes of linguistic research and
how they are presented to the general public.

Please bring examples of your encounters with popular representations of
linguistics, be that Tom Wolfe's recent book about Chomsky, The Last
Whispers <http://bloomsburyfestival.org.uk/events/event/lastwhispers/> at
the British Museum, Dan Everett's 'Don't sleep', the genre of books like
'Eats, Shoots and Leaves', David Crystal's various works, your favourite
blogs and podcasts or your thoughts about the upcoming Arrival
<https://davidadger.org/2016/09/23/how-alien-can-language-be/> film.

We will discuss both positive and problematic examples of linguistics in
popular media. In doing so we will also discuss how linguists can get
across important messages about languages and their study to combat poor
information, and how while engaging the public can be done without
spreading distortions or inaccuracies.

*Suggested r̶e̶a̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ listening:* The most recent episode of Talk the
Talk <http://talkthetalkpodcast.com/265-universal-grammar-2/> is on the
theme of Tom Wolfe's book on Chomsky, and features Dan Everett and Lynne
Murphy discussing the response to the book.
